Patient Centred Health Care
Our Nundu Deaconess Referral Hospital is a 110-bed hospital with 78+ staff and 5 physicians, offering comprehensive health care, including emergency services, maternal and child health, general surgery, chronic conditions screening and treatment including diabetes, hypertension and mental health.
Community Health Worker (CHW) Program
Guided by the One Health approach, our network of over 100 CHWs delivers household-level care, including hygiene, nutrition support, and counseling.
They connect patients to nearby facilities, address the three delays - seeking, reaching, and receiving care - and arrange emergency transport by motorbike. Supervised by mentor nurses, CHWs tackle barriers such as poverty and food insecurity while providing health and livelihood education.
Nutrition & Economic Empowerment
This integrated program combines hospital-based nutrition support with community solutions to tackle malnutrition and poverty while building resilient, healthy, and sustainable communities.
We provide patients with nutritious meals, train families to grow vegetables that improve household nutrition, and equip women and youth with entrepreneurial skills and capital to start income-generating activities.
Following the One Health approach, we promote sustainable farming, responsible livestock care, and low-cost innovations that protect the environment and strengthen public health.
Education, Training, Mentorship, and Research
Through our Nundu Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, we have trained over 450 nurses now serving across South Kivu.
Our new midwifery program addresses maternal mortality by expanding access to skilled care, with an added focus on maternal nutrition and newborn growth. We also conduct research to improve trauma-sensitive care in conflict zones and apply findings to shape stronger, more equitable health systems.
Art and Mental Wellbeing
Recognizing the trauma experienced by many in our communities, Jali Afya uses art as a form of safe expression.
We establish community-based art hubs where participants feel seen and supported, co-design culturally relevant activities with artists and survivors, and connect art sessions to counseling, peer support, or mental health referrals.
